Category Archive: 2011 Crawfish Season

From snow to sunshine

Pooooohhh-eeeee! It sure is beautiful outside down here, in south Louisiana!  The beginning of the year was pretty rocky for us, with temperatures averaging 11 degrees below normal. Our crawfish ponds were iced over and the crawfish were so cold, they couldn’t move. BUT, our weather is back to normal, and we are happy to report a 20 degree increase in temperatures since the beginning of the month, allowing the crawfish to be out and about! This much needed improvement is exactly what we needed to speed up the process of getting you guys the crawfish y’all so desperately want!

We recently sent out three orders of live crawfish to test them on the trip. We should be getting feedback really soon and can’t wait to share the news! We’ll keep y’all posted, or check us out on our Facebook page.

Not your typical Louisiana crawfish season weather

What a week here and across the country. For us in Louisiana, dropping below the freezing mark is something to talk about, but when we stay below freezing and add precipitation to the picture, we’ve got a weather event on our hands. Friday morning we woke up to frozen-over boats, traps, and ponds. Check out our pictures at the end of our blog. That may have slowed us down a little, but we didn’t let the weather stop us completely. By the afternoon, the sun started coming up and we were back in business.

Unfortunately, after doing a test shipment, our crawfish still are not quite strong enough to survive the trip to your front door. This cold weather will send a lot of our crawfish into molting which will cause them to be even weaker for a little while. So be patient with us. Our goal is to send you crawfish that are alive, and the longer we wait, the more likely that will happen. Stay posted on our Cajun Crawfish Facebook page and Twitter page.

In the mean time, we’re offering a great alternative to live crawfish! Whole cooked then frozen crawfish is a great product that we’re really impressed by, and we’re proud to offer you this incredible Louisiana product. You get 100% usage and no possibility of receiving dead, unusable crawfish. All you have to do is heat it, season it, soak it, and eat it. We’ve got 5-lb and 10-lb orders available. What a great Valentine’s Day treat for your loved ones.

After below freezing temperatures on Thursday night and Friday, our Cajun Crawfish boat is frozen over from the cold, wet weather.

Our hundreds and hundreds of acres of ponds were a little colder than normal making our live crawfish shiver in their shells.

Our live crawfish traps felt the chill of the freezing rain as well.

Y’all get ready!

Well we were out in our ponds today lookin’ for crawfish. (Check out our videos on Facebook if you haven’t already). Safe to say, the cold weather has kept the crawfish in the mud instead of crawlin’ into our traps. (What we have been catching are pretty small and probably not strong enough to make it to your door alive). In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s been pretty cold here lately as it has been for most of the rest of the country. And it’s gonna get colder here for a little while they say.

So we’re not selling just quite yet. But we think in about a month, we should be movin’ and groovin’ with live crawfish! At that point, they’ll be much bigger and stronger than they are right now. We know y’all are just as ready as we are. We get e-mail after e-mail, call after call asking when are we gonna have live crawfish. We hear y’all. We just want to be sure we’re shipping the very best product  to our customers.

To hold you over though until then, we’ve got fresh baked King Cakes, alligator fillet meat, and Gulf jumbo shrimp. Call (888) 254-8626 or look through the rest of the website to order.

Also, don’t forget to register for 10 lbs of free live crawfish delivered right to your door. We’re picking one lucky winner a week during crawfish season.
